General  Information

Within the framework of contemporary educational principles and having the aim of supplying the necessary qualified human resources, the Department of Civil Engineering realises education in under-graduate level; scientific research; publication and consultancy; developing the co-operation between universities and industry; finding solutions for the problems of buildings and structures; giving service to the community and the humanity through supplying education and research on design of projects, planning and controlling construction of the buildings, highways, bridges etc.

Every year about 100 students are admitted to the undergraduate program of the  department through the ÖSS (the exam performed all over the coutry by the Higher Education Council). The department has approximately 450 students (100 students out of them are freshmen, 100 students out of them are sophomores, 100 students out of them are juniors, 150 students out of them are seniors) and 7 main fields: Mechanics, Structure, Geotechniques, Hydraulics and Hydrology, Transportation, Material Science, Construction Management. The undergraduate education program lasts 4 years.

Civil Engineering Department has a large area of expertise including construction engineering, foundation engineering, hydraulic engineering, and materials science.

Beside the courses to be fulfilled with an overall academic degree of four years average grade of 2,00/4,00 at least, the students are also obliged to complete a 60 days’ training period for graduation. The graduates of this department are awarded the title of “Civil Engineer” and the graduates of this department develop those skills that a civil engineer needs to have such as ability to choose and purchase the materials needed; to prepare and supervise the working plans; to establish communication with all the parties involved in the activities in either the design office and the construction site. They work in public or private sector in design offices and at construction sites.

Educational and Research Facilities

The Department of Civil Engineering houses three laboratories: the Computer Laboratory, Construction materials Laboratory, Soil mechanics Laboratory.   Transportation and Hydraulics and other new laboratories will be completed soon.

The Engineering Faculty has a library with a high capacity, which develops day by day.

Scientific Activities and Graduate Studies

In order to give the students the opportunity to learn more about the building materials and their use in practice, some seminars are realised within the framework of the cooperation between the Department of Civil Engineering and the construction industry. Besides technical excursions to the fairs on construction materials and construction machines are organised regularly.

The Department offers the graduate programmes (M.Sc., Ph.D.) in the fields of Hydraulics, Structures and Geotechniques.

Social Activities

The Department organises football, basketball, voleyball and table tennis tournaments and also historical excursions, picnics, graduation balls, regularly.

Industrial Consultancy

For some building companies scientific experiments especially on concrete and soil are performed. Besides, consultancy services on construction and geotechniques are given and design and planning of construction projects are undertaken.
